Letter from our Governor Jesse Colunga March 2009

Governor’s Comments

As I near the end of my third term as your governor, I would like to reflect on the progress we’ve made in the past several years. We have survived several economic hardships, and have learned from our experiences. We have grown our membership, and also improved our lodge’s activities. We have become competitive as one of the top Moose lodges in the state, and I want to express my appreciation for the support we have received. We have become a more-diversified group of members, and with the influx of younger individuals, possess the potential to make it through this difficult economic period. We have to continue to work collectively, to blend the ideas of our younger members with those of our older group. Stay in involved in the lodge’s activities, and made recommendations for events you’d like to see promoted. This lodge will flourish only if every member does their part to help it succeed. The men and women’s boards cannot do it alone. They need your attendance at lodge functions, your assistance on Steak Nights, and participation in clean-up campaigns inside the lodge and throughout the grounds. I have often said “ Don’t come to me with a problem unless you offer a solution”. It’s very easy to complain about the state of our lodge, but in our fraternity, where volunteerism is an essential component of our existence, it is everyone’s responsibility to make a contribution. I will continue to serve in my capacity as Past Governor, and I look forward to seeing most of you in some active roles in “our” lodge.
Installation of Officers

The men and women have conducted their nominations for their respective boards, and the candidates have been elected by acclimation. The installation of officers will take place on Saturday, April 25th at 6:30 PM for the women, followed by the men at 7:30 PM. There will be a meal after the two ceremonies, and Moses Avila has agreed to entertain the group with his DJ music. This is a great opportunity for all lodge members, new or old, to observe a special activity.
New member campaign

We have several weeks left in our new membership drive, and we are currently ranked second-best lodge in the State in recruiting. Moose International has waived its $20.00 application fee, so men can sign up for $30.00 annual dues, and women can sign up for $20.00 through April 28th. Help us become the “Number 1” lodge in the State by signing your friends, neighbors or “significant others”.
Moose International Convention

This year’s International Convention will be held in Chicago from May 22-27, 2009 and we have received some correspondence insisting that we send two delegates to the event. We are hosting two events to raise money to send two officers to Chicago. The first event will be held on Friday, April 17th from 8 PM – midnight with musical entertainment by Masquerade, one of our most-requested bands. Cover charge for this dance will be $5.00. On Sunday, May 17, 2009, Los Texas Wranglers, recently voted as Austin’s Best Traditional Latin Band for the 2nd year in a row, will be playing in a “Tardeada” from 3:00 – 7:00 PM. Pre-sale tickets are available for $8.00 per person. See David Chavez, Janie Zambrano or me for tickets or more information. Both of these bands are fantastic! Come check them out!

A WORD OR TWO FROM THE SENIOR REGENT

SHERRY L. KUMBERA - 512-287-1178

This is my final input as Senior Regent. Let us congratulate our newly elected Board of Officers. Terrie Chavez will be our incoming Senior Regent. She will need all the help you can give her. Being Senior Regent is a rewarding position, but very demanding. We all need to back her up any way we can. Johnnie Cassity was elected Recorder, and Linda Terry was elected Secretary/Treasurer. As retiring Senior Regent, I will automatically go into the Junior Graduate Regent's Chair. We will be voting on Brenda Mays for the Position of Chaplain, and we have a nominating committee meeting on Tuesday, April 14, for the position of Jr. Regent.

Terrie, is going to need chairmen. Please volunteer to take a chair & hold a fundraiser. That and sponsoring is what keeps the Chapter going. In order for the Chapter to make it's Award of Achievement, we must pay our dues when they come due, sponsor upstanding members, support the functions and have a good time doing it. If the Chapter does not make the Award of Achievement, then no one makes their personal honors. Any person that holds a chair, elected or appointed, sponsors two (2 or more) new members, holds a fundraiser (where required) will become qualified to be a member of the Academy of Friendship. That is the first of the Higher Degrees a member can achieve.

On Friday, April 10, we will meet at the lodge to fill Easter eggs with candy and decorate. On Saturday, April 12, we will have the children’s Easter Egg Hunt, games & Cake Walk. We will serve hot dogs, chips & soda for the kids, beginning at noon and ending at 2:00 pm. We can always use cakes, cookies & cup cakes for the cakewalk.

On the 14th we have our Chapter meeting, which is our Health Awareness meeting. Our Chairman is Karyn Wieland. She is also our Yoga Instructor every Thursday night. All the people on her committee should come out and help her hostess the meeting. We usually serve finger foods.

You have a real treat in store for you on Friday the 17th. Maricela Benitez is preparing Hamburger Steaks smothered in gravy. We will be serving salad, green beans, roll & dessert all for the sum of $6.00 per plate. She is a fantastic cook. Calendar meeting starts at 7:00 pm with dinner to follow.

Our biggest event of the year is our Installation of Officers & Chairmen. This will happen on Saturday, April 25th. The W.O.T.M. Installation will begin sharply at 6:30 PM, followed by the L.O.O.M Installation. We will be serving refreshments after that & we will have Moe as our DJ for your listening & dancing pleasure.

I hate to repeat myself, but the success of the Chapter is not an "I" thing, or a "ME" thing. It is a "WE" thing. No individual has ever made the Award of Achievement by herself. WE MUST ALL, AS A CHAPTER, WORK TOGETHER FOR THE BETTERMENT OF CHAPTER. A chapter in a book is a collection of words held together to make sense for the story. As a Chapter, we are a collection of members that work TOGETHER for the good of Mooseheart & Moosehaven. That is our sole purpose.

As outgoing Senior Regent, I pass the gavel to Terrie Chavez. She, I know, will be an awesome Senior Regent, because she is a hard worker and has all of us supporting her.

ALWAYS REMEMBER: IF YOU SEE SOMEONE WITHOUT A SMILE, GIVE THEM ONE OF YOURS. WHO KNOWS YOU JUST MIGHT GET ONE BACK. BESIDES, IT DOESN'T COST A THING, BUT CAN BE SO REWARDING.

Fraternally,
Sherry L. Kumbera
Outgoing Senior Regent
